A DSP’s Untold Tryst with Humane Policing Guided by Empathy

The spotlight this week on The Indie Talk Show,  was the gripping episode, hosted by Charanpreet Singh Bagga, that traces the life and work of retired DSP Avinash Mishra, through the engaging conversation Bagga skillfully unravels the realities of policing that often remain hidden behind uniforms.

Responding to questions put to him by Bagga,  DSP, Mishra recounted his journey in the police force, which was not only intense but one marked by discipline, danger, and difficult decisions. He emphasized that policing is not just about enforcing the law but about understanding human psychology. “Crime often stems from circumstance, not just intent,” he reflects, highlighting how empathy can be as important as authority.

Having said that, Mishra holds the mental and emotional challenges officers face of utmost importance and emphatically stresses that constant exposure to crime scenes and high-pressure situations can take a toll on mental wellbeing, stressing the need for mental resilience and strong ethical grounding within the enforcement agencies in the State.

Emphasizing that Mental well-being is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of policing in India, Mishra feels,  Police officers face intense stress daily ranging from high-pressure law enforcement situations and long, irregular working hours to exposure to violence, accidents, and human suffering. Over time, this can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder, affecting both personal life and professional efficiency.

Initiatives such as counselling services, stress management programs, peer support networks, and resilience training can help officers cope with the psychological demands of their roles. By recognizing and addressing mental health challenges, the police force can foster a healthier, more alert, and empathetic workforce capable of serving society with dedication and integrity, explains Mishra.

One of the most striking takeaways is Mishra’s belief in prevention over punishment. He explains that community awareness, education, and trust between citizens and police can significantly reduce crime rates. His real-life anecdotes add depth, showing how quick thinking and integrity can change outcomes.

When questioned, if he thought that youth today should consider careers in the enforcement agencies, he responds with a reflective note, urging the youth to consider careers in public service not for power, but for purpose.

Overall, this particular podcast was a powerful reminder that behind every badge is a human being navigating complexities, making tough calls, and striving to maintain justice with compassion.
